The gas lift replacement is the most overhyped repair in the gaming chair world, because it takes 20 minutes, costs less than a pizza, and will save you from buying a whole new chair when only one cheap cylinder has failed.

I've replaced lifts on four chairs in the last two years, including my own Secretlab Titan and a friend's GT Racing that bottomed out in both foam and height. When it fails, the seal inside has worn out and the piston slowly bleeds down. You can't repair the seal. You can only replace the whole cylinder.

The universal replacement market exists because chair manufacturers mostly use a standard size. The cylinder is 50mm at the base where it slots into the chair's star base, and 2 inches at the top where it connects to the seat mechanism. There are variations, so measure yours before ordering. I've seen chairs with a 45mm base, and those need a different cylinder. Measure the diameter at both ends and the total length. That's the entire spec sheet you need.

The replacement cylinder is a straight swap. You're not rewiring anything, not adjusting tension, not recalibrating. You pull the old one out and push the new one in. The only tool you need beyond a screwdriver is a rubber mallet or a dead-blow hammer. A metal hammer will damage the cylinder and the chair base.

Performance: The 20-minute swap

The process is the same on every chair I've tested. You tilt the chair on its side, remove the four bolts holding the seat mechanism to the seat pan, and lift the seat off. The cylinder is now exposed, sticking out of the star base.

This is where most people get stuck. The cylinder is seated into the base with a friction fit, and it does not want to come out. You can try twisting it with a pipe wrench, but you'll likely just round off the metal. The right way is to flip the base upside down, place the cylinder's base plate over a gap (like between two boards or on the edge of a step), and drive it out with a mallet. A rubber mallet works. A dead-blow hammer works better because it transfers more energy into the impact.

My first attempt took 25 minutes because I didn't have the base positioned right and the cylinder wouldn't budge. Once I set it up correctly, it took two solid whacks and the cylinder dropped out. The whole job, from unbolting to reassembly, took 15 minutes on the Secretlab and 20 on the GT Racing because the bolts on the GT Racing were stripped from the factory.

The new cylinder goes in the same way it came out, in reverse. You seat it into the base with a mallet, drop the seat mechanism over the top, and bolt everything back down. Then you test it. Sit in the chair, pull the lever, and raise the height. If it holds, you're done. If it sinks even a little, you either got a defective cylinder or you didn't seat it fully. I've had one defective universal cylinder in four replacements. It sank two inches in the first hour, and I returned it and got a replacement that's been solid for eight months.

Durability: What actually kills a lift

The gas lift is not the weak point of most chairs. It's the foam. I've seen chairs where the lift is fine but the seat has bottomed out, and the owner blames the cylinder because the chair feels lower. If your chair is sinking but also feels hard and you can feel the seat pan through the cushion, the foam is dead and a new lift won't fix it.

The lift's lifespan depends on your weight and how often you adjust it. I'm 220 lbs, and I've had the original lift on my Secretlab Titan last two years and counting. I did not fix the Respawn. I did fix the GT Racing, because the frame was solid and the foam was still acceptable. Should you buy it?

If your chair holds up otherwise and the only problem is the sinking, yes. A $25 cylinder and 20 minutes of your time will give you another two to three years of use.
